NIFFF 2019: NIFFF INVASION PUTS INNOVATION AT THE HEART OF THE CITY
As a free and unifying event of the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival (NIFFF), NIFFF INVASION will make the heart of the ancient city pound from July 5th to July 13th. Co-produced with the City of Neuchâtel, it stands as an invitation to experience the festival in the city’s most emblematic locations. The programme, which includes open air screenings of cult classics, exclusive groundbreaking interactive installations, augmented screenings for the little ones and music parties for their elders, will be a celebration of imagination through the lens of interdisciplinarity and innovation.
NIFFF INVASION aims at enhancing public awareness of the fantasy genre, while offering visitors a chance to experience the most charming aspects of Neuchâtel. This year, NIFFF INVASION will take hold of the City Hall’s Peristyle with one hell of an exhibition — DIABLERIES. This never-seen-before event will include 50 stereoscopic paintings from the collection of Brian May, the legendary Queen guitarist. A unique experience that will make the public travel through the history of proto cinema.
For the second year in a row, cult classics will be shown at the NIFFF Open Air at Place des Halles. The Temple du Bas will transform to hold interactive installations that will immerse you in virtual worlds.
The audience’s field of perception will be enlarged by THE IMMERSIVE LAB, a high level research project from The Institute for Computer Music and Sound Technology (Zurich University of the Arts) and the Swiss Centre for Affective Sciences (University of Geneva).
Audience members will also be able to discover the game DR. GRORDBORT’S INVADERS in a brand-new setting. Developed by the prestigious Weta Workshop studio and experienced through mixed reality glasses designed by Magic Leap. Also available will be two films from VR Cemetery, conceived by the Geneva International Film Festival (GIFF).
Kids won’t be left out with KID-O-NIFFF, a selection of the directorial debuts of young filmmakers, and with the animated film NEXT DOOR SPY, presented in collaboration with La Lanterne Magique.
With MUSIC@NIFFF, the festival-goers will be able to end on a musical note through an original and festive programme.

The NIFFF will offer an exclusive immersion in the depths of proto cinema, which inspired fantasy film pioneers. The exhibition will include 50 paintings, a dynamic slideshow and a 3D film made by Studios Unanico and the London Stereoscopic Company. As a collector of stereoscopic photographs, Brian May spent decades gathering all 182 Diableries (dioramas composed of clay miniatures that depict everyday life in hell), created between 1860 and 1900 in France. Seen through the lens of a stereoscope, they create an illusion similar to augmented reality.
