FANTASTIQUE 20 20 20: THE NIFFF IS BACK AT THE SWISS FILM ARCHIVE FROM TOMORROW ON

To celebrate its 20th edition (2–10 July), the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival (NIFFF) is joining forces with the Swiss Film Archive to showcase its travelling anniversary programme: Fantastique 20 20 20. This project, which was conceived to go from one city to another, has been greatly derailed by the health crisis. It can finally start touring again. First stop: Lausanne. A selection of 13 essential films spanning two decades of fantastic films will invite the audience to explore the evolution of the genre through the work of seminal filmmakers: Quentin Tarantino, Lars von Trier, Lynn Ramsay, Takeshi Kitano, Park Chan-wook, Lisa Brühlmann.

The “NIFFF : 20 Years of Fantastic Films” programme at the Swiss Film Archive will take place on 21–30 April. It will open with ZATŌICHI from Japanese director Takeshi Kitano (21.04, 9 p.m.) and close with Lars von Trier’s MELANCHOLIA (30.04, 9 p.m.).

20 YEARS OF EVOLUTION IN FANTASTIC FILMS

Since the NIFFF’s inception in 2000, the fantasy genre has gone through many transformations. Historically hidden away in the background for a niche audience, it has become an essential incubator in audiovisual productions. From superhero blockbusters to indie movies, TV shows, and streaming content, the fantasy genre continues to permeate today’s imagination.

The programme showing at the Swiss Film Archive offers to ponder on a dual evolution: by showing the transformations of the past 20 years, and by highlighting filmmakers, trends, and countries that had a major impact on the genre as well as the NIFFF.

13 FILMS TO EXPLORE THE BREADTH OF A PROTEAN GENRE

The programme will notably explore Spanish horror cinema ([•REC], EL ORFANATO), which success and influence have reached far beyond the country’s borders. Also featured are films from filmmakers such as Lars von Trier (MELANCHOLIA), Quentin Tarantino (DEATH PROOF), Lynn Ramsay (WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN), and Park Chan-wook (OLD BOY), which have fuelled and enriched the imagination of a very codified genre. Designed to go alongside the NIFFF’s 20th edition, this programme has two axes: the incredible rise of the festival over the course of two decades, and that of a genre enjoying an ever-growing presence. A paradigm shift that led to the crowning of films such as THE SHAPE OF WATER at the Oscars and BLUE MY MIND at the Swiss Quartz Film Award.

“Although fantastic films have gone a lot more mainstream, some myths about the genre still survive. This is one more reason for the NIFFF to pursue its mission as curator, to shine a light on a genre and its history, but also probe its future. The epidemic we are living through has made it even more obvious than before: through the mirror it places in front of the audience, fantasy reflects and bends our reality, our fears, and invites us to question ourselves. It is the catalyst of our subconscious.”
